Constellations: The Thematic Movie Sonadow song in my humblest opinion

Stars as a theme are ever present in Sonic 3 and as a lover of astrological symbolism you KNOW I gobbled it up like a last meal. Shadow literally coming from a falling star then having Maria's "the star shines even if it's gone" i'm so happy they committed to this as a motif. The gold of Sonic and Shadow's powered up forms as they fly through the sky like comets, and the fact that just like stars, Shadow and Sonic are quite possibly from galaxies away. Symbolism blah blah blah.

I will now elaborate on why for me, Constellations by the Oh Hellos is on theme with movie Sonadow's story and themes. I hope it's not as boring as it sounds lol I'm just very used to writing these things in a formal essay technique.

To start, the first sound of the song is this gentle guitar, it's very reminiscent of the guitar Maria plays in Shadow's introduction scene in the movie. It's simple, gentle, just like Shadow's life before the G.U.N. Raid. The main singer is our beloved Tyler Heath, with backings from his sister Maggie Heath. I like to think in this context, it's Shadow singing with Maria joining him in the back as a little voice of encouragement. Later, more voices are added to the harmony, and maybe I'm a sentimental bastard but to me it's the new people in Shadow's life (AHEM SONIC) that join in, all of it being a warm reminder that Shadow has a place in the world with those who love him, from the past and future ahead.

Okay lyric brainrot time, I'll try to format this in tandem with the song so that the pauses happen with each separate group of lyrics (Oh Hellos instrumentals are divine by the way). As of writing this post, I'm still pondering some of the lyrics connections but I will make updates if I discover new interpretations!

In general, Constellations is interpreted as a song about breaking past beliefs and the inner turmoil that can result from the cognitive dissonance. Sound familiar?

"I can feel it on my tongue; brick and mortar Thick as scripture, drawing lines in the sand and laying borders As tall as towers I babble on until my voice is gone"

The sensory feeling of something being on the tongue; Shadow is trying to speak but he's held back by his memories. Everything he remember is in the ashes of his once home, and in a bid of self preservation he builds the walls around himself. He knows how the world sees him from all the grief it's put him through in the past, so at least in his eyes, this is necessary to protect himself from future hurt.

"This hill I'll die on is about 90 meters of bricks Coloured indigo, and inscribed with my name, and lined with cedar But the words fall flat like Cymbals crashing, like molars gnashing"

From his despair Shadow plans to die underneath the weight of his own revenge and self isolation. But he still hesitates, as seen in his final conversation with Gerald Robotnik ( "is this what Maria would have wanted?"). His love for Maria, and knowing that she believed the best in him, prevent his anger from full reaching full intensity. In the end, the weights of Shadow's past become his newfound determination. To make right, and hopefully live the life Maria always wanted for him.

For a good part of the movie, Shadow is confused of Maria's intentions for him after her death. Would she be angry with her perpetrators? Would she want Shadow to die in an attempt to make right? The only thing he is sure of is his love for his sister, and the love she gave back. It's the anchor point, where all his actions lead back to.

"All that's left for me to climb to the heavens is The chasm of the night and a matter of time But I hear the rumble as the tectonic plates start to shake And I feel my blood pounding like the beat of a drum"

Going a little bit backwards but I interpret this as the perspective of Shadow while still believing vengeance is the right option. He accepts he will die and maybe even see Maria beyond life, even if he has to resort to an unspeakable act (chasm of night). But Sonic is there as his equal not just in skill but past experiences. Sonic's understanding combined with Maria's compassion are what ultimately touch Shadow and shake him from the path of destruction.

In your classic musical fashion, the chorus returns stronger than the last, and I think of it as Sonic adding his more vivacious energy with Shadow's new confidence in what is right to do. With new perspective, Sonic and Shadow have found their constellation, the key to it being embracing their shared past as a way forward.

"Like constellations imploding in the night Everything is turning, everything is turning And the shapes that you drew may change beneath a different light Everything you thought you knew will fall apart, but you'll be all right"

I LOVE THE MOON SCENE I LOVE IT SO MUCH. As Shadow and Sonic share their past with each other in a moment of vulnerability, the stars glimmer above watchfully. And like the ever changing constellations and systems, Shadow is able to change his perspective on his past. Shadow lost his home, his sister, and his old life. But, I like to imagine it's Sonic that says the last line to him with a hand outstretched. The stars are Sonic and Shadow, aliens from far away who found their light despite the seemingly endless darkness. The stars are reminders of Sonic and Shadow's old lives, which can now be cherished in their hearts as a warm glow, despite not being physically present anymore. And as the world turns to reveal the sun, Shadow's realization of his own heart is recognized as they are both bathed in a heavenly ray. ABSOLUTE CINEMA.

Whew I did that mostly in one sitting I hope it made sense. Maybe I'll do it again with my other playlist's songs it was fun! Please do share thoughts, feedbacks, addons, anything if you have it really! Anyway back to crying to my Sonadow Playlist.

For BB!Bumble, I feel like Constellations by the Oh Hellos is her song. It's about the fall of the Tower of Babel, but also... the way that things explode and change, the loss of meaning after something you love has gone away, how everything is a sort of interpretation.

The opening lines especially bring to mind the First Battle, and its buildup.

How she couldn't translate fast enough, Clear Sky, Thunder Storm, and Tall Shadow eventually ignoring her to shout at each other in Tribemew, The Wind Runner demanding Bumble give the words to her so SHE can shout, King Arc losing patience just wanting his son back.

The way she can feel that it's all about to topple down, the building fury, the horrible dawning that she's lost control and is about to be in the middle of the battlefield.

The invocations of "constellations" later in the songs also strikes me a certain way, with Bumble in mind. She wasn't raised with a star-based religion. How strange must it have been, for the strength of belief of all the other cats to make it real?

The idea that it's all lines we drew, to make meanings. She is a character who grapples with that, too, her own self-worth, purpose, and meaning in early ThunderClan. Especially when (ironically, considering the story of the tower of babel), the languages start to merge into Clanmew and her work isn't needed like it was.

And the end of the song has that, too.

2. Two - Sleeping at Last: as i mentioned i had some trouble finding songs for scott since i dont watch his pov too often, so some of these are less exclusively last life and more just his character in general. that being said, i do feel like this still fits to an extent for LL!Scott

3. Constellations - The Oh Hellos: at first this one was only here for the star symbolism, but after listening to it a couple more times it does fit pretty well (also the oh hellos is very scottagecore)

Like constellations imploding in the night Everything is turning, everything is turning The shapes that you drew may change beneath a different light And everything you thought you knew Will fall apart, but you'll be all right (LL was really the only series in which they made a point to isolate the reds- in DL, there was always a pair, and alliances stayed solid despite name color in LimL and SL- but in LL, alliances could be torn apart so quickly, loyalties constantly changing which made it hard to trust others and that shows why scott's loyalty stood out)

4. How to Be a Heartbreaker - Marina and the Diamonds: this is another one that isn't exclusively LL, i just had to put one in abt scotts many ex's.

Rule number one is that you gotta have fun But, baby, when you're done, you gotta be the first to run Rule number two, just don't get attached to Somebody you could lose (i see these "rules" kind of as lessons learned from each season instead, like things he tells himself he'll do next time, but because of his loyal and caring nature, never can)

How to be a heartbreaker Boys they like the look of danger We'll get him falling for a stranger A player, singing I lo-lo-love you At least I think I do (really like i said, a play on the ex's)

5. The Garden - The Crane Wives: here it is, the obligatory crane wives song

Merlinverse Musical March: Day 4

Constellations by The Oh Hellos: Sena seeing time on a larger scale than mortals, watching, contemplating and reflecting on all the little good deeds he's done and seen and how they've affected the present day. And him wondering how his actions in the present day will shape the future.

(Sena trying to reason and plead with the other gods of Esperia, trying to get them to see what their own conflicts are doing to the people of Esperia and going unheard even when he ‘babbles on until his voice is gone’. Then watching as the people of Esperia grew divided after the Immortal War, separating into factions and splitting the land into their respective territories, while feeling the weight of responsibility settle on his shoulders.)

This hill I'll die on is about 90 meters of bricks Coloured indigo, and inscribed with my name, and lined with cedar But the words fall flat like Cymbals crashing, like molars gnashing

(Sena knowing that as The People’s God, the hill he’s willing to die on is the well-being of Esperia’s people, but that his titles, as gilded and glorified as they are, mean nothing in the grander scheme of things/ Sena no longer feels connected to his old Divine name and feels like the power it once held has faded away since it’s no longer him.)

'Cause like constellations a million years away Every good intention, every good intention Is interpolation, a line we drew in the array

(Mortals do good deeds hoping it will make a positive change in the future, knowing they may not live to see the impact their actions have. But Sena will. This verse is Sena being able to reflect on his long history and see all the individual threads, tiny acts of kindness and seemingly inconsequential decisions that wove together to shape the reality he sees in front of him now. Getting to see the effects of his own choices play out in real-time, knowing the decisions he makes in the present will also have lingering effects that even he can’t always predict.)

Looking for the faces, looking for the shapes in the silence

(Sometimes Sena finds himself looking for familiar faces in a crowd, long after the people they belonged to have passed on. Other times he meets someone new and knows they’re going to do great things someday and imagines how they’ll fit into the grand tapestry of destiny.)

All that's left for me to climb to the heavens is The chasm of the night and a matter of time

(Sena could be a god again. He could be THE God of Esperia if he wanted, could reclaim his true divinity and the power of the dead gods and rule as the sovereign deity of Esperia…)

But I hear the rumble as the tectonic plates start to shake And I feel my blood pounding like the beat of a drum

(But he won’t because that would mean growing detached from Esperia and its people. Sena would rather be ‘weak’ and compassionate than omnipotent and indifferent. He refuses to make the same mistakes as the old gods, refuses to rule from some gilded city looking down passively at his mortal charges. He loves Esperia, loves its people. It’s something he feels in the very depths of his soul, something that is an inextricable part of who he is. And he wouldn’t trade that for any amount of power or influence that true godhood could grant him.)

(Time will keep moving forward, things will continue to change and Sena will bear witness to it all, the good and bad, the joyful and the heartbreaking. Actions he took in the past believing they were right may seem like the wrong decision later on, things he thought he knew may have been incorrect all along, but he knows it will be all right in the end because he’ll always be there to fix things. Not just his own mistakes, but those of the old gods, and his beloved mortals too…)

More about each song below the cut bc I'm a music nerd and I love talking about the meanings behind a piece and how the songs are tied to a character to me :)

The Silence by Bastille

"Tell me a piece of your history that you're proud to call your own // Speak in words you picked up as you walked through life alone // we used to swim in your stories and be pulled down by their tide"

I think this song really speaks to Jeramie's relationship with storytelling, how he was alone for so long and his only connection to the people around him was their own relationship with his writings, specifically the legend of King Ohger. He was just writing the story as he saw it, a piece of his history, and it left a wake of destruction behind him that he didn't see until now.

Two by Sleeping at Last

"I will love you without a single string attached"

I just really love this album by Sleeping at Last, at least one song from Enneagram is on almost all of my character playlists. The album is nine songs written one about each enneagram personality type, so the idea is there kinda is one song that will really speak to each different personality type. I also love the imagery of "strings attached" in this song for Jeramie with the theme of webbing and being metaphorically and literally attached to the people he cares about. Jeramie is a force to be reckoned with emotionally, he cares deeply and intensely, and this song really encapsulates that vibe to me.

I feel like... do I really need to explain this one? Its just about the idea of immortalizing a love, a story, a feeling in words that will last forever. Jeramie is all about this lol

Heirloom by Sleeping at Last

"This crooked posture is all you've ever known // It is the consequence of living in between // The weight of family and the pull of gravity"

"When you inhereted a fight that you were born to lose // It's not your fault"

Two lines from this one!! I had to include the line where they literally say "living in between" for the king of the in-between of course, but to me this song is all about Jeramie and his parents. He inherited a life riddled with prejudice that he should never have had to face, something his parents never would have wanted for him, but as opposed to the lyrics, it's a fight he's winning. He inherited so much more love and wisdom from his parents than anything else, and it's something he's very proud of.

Constellations by The Oh Hellos

This song is directly about the misinterpretation of scripture, of words lost in translation from hundreds of years ago. In general I cannot recommend The Oh Hellos' four seasons albums enough (Notos, Eurus, Boreas, Zephyrus), especially if you're like me and have some... extensive religious trauma lmao. The Oh Hellos write many many songs unraveling the religion they were raised in with respect and heart, and their works are truly beautiful poetically and musically. ANYWAYS. Constellations being about the misinterpretation of words written with intentions far gone from their current use really sticks to the whole "Jeramie writing the legend of King Ohger" thing well. Every good intention, or bad in the case of the people of Chikyuu, was simply an interpolation taken from the base writings Jeramie left for people to interpret.

Welcome back to I love these albums by The Oh Hellos. Once again this has to do with Jeramie's storytelling, but I think on a deeper level this one is less about the misinterpretation and more about Jeramie's confidence in his own works, if what he's doing is right given what's happened, him being more aware of the effects his words have on people. Jeramie has been around for a long time, and in this time he's been through a lot and seen a lot, relived the cyclical history over and over. His writings are his life, his everything, and yet he always feels he could be doing more. Honestly, this one is kinda hard for me to articulate well on because it's just... the vibes are so right for him lol. The emotion is there.

I'm sure over time I'll add more songs to this playlist, but I hope you enjoy my silly analytical response to the songs I have for my beloved Mr. Jeramie Spiders who I think about a bit too often <3
